Cloud-Climate Feedback Mechanisms:
Impact of Reduction in Fossil-Fuel Emissions


Currently, there are large uncertainties associated with the climate forcing due to the indirect (or cloud-mediated) effect of aerosols. This report contains a first set of observations of the relationship between the remotely sensed cloud albedo and the cloud microstructure obtained from ground-based in situ measurements which were made using a 17.1 m tall meteorological tower in the Mount Mitchell (6,684 ft or 2,038 m MSL --highest peak in eastern America) State park, North Carolina. The three year data seta have been used to establish a relationship between cloud water chemistry, the microphysical characteristics of clouds, and the type of cloud forming air masses (continental, polluted, or marine), back trajectories of which were computed using the Hybrid single particle Lagrangain Integrated Trajectory (HY-SPLIT) model.
